INNOVATION FROM TRADITION

System development in medical technology

From concept to approval: we reliably bring your medical technology projects to fruition—safely, efficiently, and in compliance with standards. Our integrated engineering combines hardware, software, and mechanics with regulatory requirements to create a consistently well-thought-out system development that noticeably optimizes your time to market.

Challenges in system development

Innovative ideas alone are not enough—in medical technology, precise implementation is key. But this is precisely where the challenges begin: development processes are often fragmented, interfaces between mechanics, electronics, and software are unclear, and regulatory requirements slow down the pace. Without a consistent understanding of the system, delays and uncertainties in documentation arise—and ultimately, time-to-market suffers.

Are you developing an innovative medical device, but the complexity of standards, technology, and documentation keeps bringing your project to a standstill?

Your development processes are fragmented: mechanics, electronics, and software work side by side—instead of together?

The next audit or approval test is coming up—but you don’t have reliable evidence of consistent documentation?

Is your time-to-market suffering from interface problems, communication gaps, or unclear responsibilities?

Holistic system development for medical devices

Our solution: We bring all disciplines of system development under one roof. Our interdisciplinary team combines mechanical, electronic, software, and regulatory expertise in a structured, validated process—specifically tailored to the requirements of medical technology.

Reduced time-to-market through coordinated development steps

Regulatory compliance thanks to development processes in accordance with DIN ISO 13485 and compliance with standards such as DIN ISO 60601, DIN ISO 14971, etc.

Minimized project risk through uniform system architecture and clear responsibilities

Maximum efficiency through seamless integration of mechanics, hardware, and software

Transparent communication through dedicated contact persons and agile project methodology

Insights from practice

Many of our projects are subject to strict confidentiality agreements. We are therefore all the more pleased to be able to present a publicly accessible example in which we have been involved:

In an interdisciplinary research project at the Technical University of Munich, an intelligent training device for strengthening the back muscles was developed – the so-called GyroTrainer. This device enables individually tailored training that responds to the specific abilities of the user. It is based on a round platform with a diameter of approximately 50 centimeters that can tilt and rotate in different directions. Sensors and electric motors register weight shifts and adjust the movements of the platform accordingly. An algorithm determines the intensity of the workout, enabling a customized training program. B&W played a key role in the development of the system and contributed to the successful implementation of this innovative project (source: Technical University of Munich, November 14, 2023. Our development process:
Structured, traceable, certified

Turning ideas into successful medical devices requires more than just good technology—it requires a system. Our process is clearly structured, compliant with standards (ISO 13485), and fully traceable. This is how we create the basis for safe, market-ready products.

Our system in 4 steps:

We start with a precise analysis of your product idea, target markets, and regulatory requirements. This ensures that we set the right course from the very beginning.

Hardware, software, and mechanics are designed as an integrated overall system. We define interfaces and requirements and document everything clearly for later testing.

We develop your product in agile loops – always with an eye on testing, validation, and regulatory compliance. This way, we avoid surprises at the end.

We accompany you through to production and provide support with technical documentation and approval. We can also remain on board afterwards if you wish.

We don’t see ourselves as a traditional service provider, but rather as a long-term development partner. Even after the project is complete, we remain at your side – for expansions, adjustments, lifecycle management, or the next generation of your product. Because true innovation comes from working together.

‘For me, it is particularly important that we develop responsibly. In medical technology, the best basis for quality is to stand behind one's own development. In my role as division manager, I can also communicate this way of thinking to customers and within the team.’

‘I like to make my life colourful and diverse. The B&W project world is super diverse, and in my job as a system engineer, I particularly enjoy supporting the various trades. My position as a division manager also includes tasks such as resource planning and personnel management. Yes, it's a lot, but in a good team it's all the more fun!’
